Why Shaw Avenue Has Become a Hotspot for Car Accidents in Fresno

If you drive anywhere in Fresno, you already know Shaw Avenue. It cuts straight across the city east to west, connecting neighborhoods, shopping centers, schools, and freeway on-ramps. It’s one of the busiest roads in town. And unfortunately, it’s also one of the most dangerous. Crashes on Shaw Avenue have been making headlines for years now, and the numbers aren’t getting better. If you’ve been hurt in a collision on this road or anywhere nearby, talking to an experienced Fresno car accident lawyer can help you understand your options and protect your right to compensation. At Bojat Law Group, we’ve worked with accident victims across Fresno County, and we know firsthand how often Shaw Avenue comes up.

How Busy Is Shaw Avenue?

Shaw Avenue isn’t just another city street. It’s Fresno’s primary commercial corridor, running from the rural western edges of Fresno County all the way through Clovis on the east side. Certain sections see well over 60,000 vehicles per day, and near intersections like Shaw and Bradley, daily counts have been reported as high as 92,000. That kind of volume puts it on par with some freeway segments in smaller cities.

The road is lined with strip malls, big-box stores, restaurants, gas stations, and office parks. Fresno State sits right off Shaw on the east end. The SR-41 freeway crosses it in the middle of town. There are constant left turns into driveways and parking lots, pedestrians crossing at random points, delivery trucks slowing traffic, and drivers cutting across lanes to make last-second turns. It’s a recipe for collisions.

Most Dangerous Intersections Along Shaw Avenue

Not every part of Shaw carries the same risk. Several specific intersections have earned reputations as some of the worst in Fresno.

Shaw Avenue and Blackstone Avenue

This is one of Fresno’s most heavily trafficked intersections, sitting right in the middle of a dense commercial zone. Shopping centers, restaurants, and a bus transit hub all converge here. The volume of cars trying to turn in and out of businesses, combined with pedestrians navigating the crosswalks, makes this spot consistently dangerous. Studies have flagged it as one of the top collision locations in the entire city.

Shaw Avenue and Cedar Avenue

Cedar and Shaw is another high-crash intersection. Multiple lanes merge, and there’s heavy pedestrian foot traffic nearby. In May 2025, a pedestrian was critically injured after being struck by a car near Cedar just south of Shaw. This wasn’t an isolated event. The intersection has been identified by multiple safety analyses as one of Fresno’s most hazardous crossings due to the sheer number of vehicles passing through and the lack of adequate signage in certain spots.

Shaw Avenue and Marks Avenue

Located in west Fresno, this intersection sees a dangerous mix of high traffic volume and reckless driving behaviors like red-light running and speeding. In December 2025, a pedestrian was fatally struck by multiple vehicles near Shaw and Marks in the early morning hours. Earlier that same year, an SUV burst into flames after flying off the roadway at a nearby intersection. These are not freak occurrences—this stretch of Shaw has a pattern of serious incidents.

Shaw Avenue and First Street

In January 2025, a man was killed while walking in the crosswalk at Shaw and First Street in northeast Fresno. It happened just before 6 a.m.—early enough that visibility was still low. The driver stayed on scene and cooperated, and drugs and alcohol were not suspected. This crash highlighted a recurring problem: even when pedestrians are doing everything right, the road conditions and traffic speeds on Shaw make crossings extremely risky.

Shaw Avenue and SR-41

Where Shaw crosses the SR-41 freeway, you get a flood of cars merging on and off ramps while trying to navigate through a busy commercial stretch. In January 2026, a seven-vehicle pileup was reported at this exact intersection during a Friday afternoon. Multiple people were injured. The combination of freeway-speed traffic trying to merge with stop-and-go surface street traffic creates a uniquely dangerous situation here.

Shaw Avenue and Floyd Avenue

Out on the west end of Shaw, where the road passes through more rural areas of Fresno County, the risks shift. In January 2025, four people died in a fiery crash at Shaw and Floyd avenues. Investigators believed alcohol was a factor. In September 2025, two more drivers were seriously injured in a head-on collision at the same intersection when distracted driving was suspected. This stretch of Shaw tends to see higher speeds and fewer traffic controls, which makes crashes here more likely to be fatal.

Why Shaw Avenue Is So Dangerous?

There’s no single reason Shaw Avenue is a hotspot for car accidents. It’s a combination of factors that all feed into each other.

Sheer Traffic Volume

When you’re pushing 60,000 to 90,000 cars per day through a surface street with traffic lights, driveways, and crosswalks, collisions are almost inevitable. More cars on the road means more opportunities for something to go wrong, especially during rush hour and weekend shopping traffic.

Constant Turns Into Commercial Properties

Shaw is lined with shopping centers and businesses. Drivers are constantly slowing down to turn left across traffic or pulling out of parking lots into fast-moving lanes. These turning movements are where a huge number of T-bone and rear-end crashes happen. Left turns across oncoming traffic are especially risky when larger vehicles block the view of approaching cars.

Pedestrian Exposure

With all those shopping centers, bus stops, and nearby neighborhoods, people are walking along and across Shaw Avenue constantly. But the road was designed to move cars quickly, not to protect pedestrians. There are long stretches with no marked crosswalks at uncontrolled intersections, which forces people to cross at unprotected spots. Multiple fatal pedestrian crashes in 2025 alone tell this story clearly.

High Speeds on a Mixed-Use Road

The speed limits on Shaw Avenue range from 40 to 50 mph in many areas, but the wide lanes and straight road encourage drivers to go even faster. When you have cars traveling at near-highway speeds alongside pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers pulling out of parking lots, the margin for error shrinks dramatically. And when crashes do happen at those speeds, the injuries are far more severe.

Distracted and Impaired Driving

Distracted driving has been flagged as a contributing factor in multiple Shaw Avenue crashes, including the head-on collision at Shaw and Floyd in September 2025. The Central Valley consistently ranks among the worst regions in California for distracted driving incidents. Add in impaired driving—like the DUI-related crash that killed four people at Shaw and Floyd in January 2025—and the danger multiplies.

Road Design That Hasn’t Kept Up

Parts of Shaw Avenue were built decades ago when Fresno was a much smaller city. The road was designed to handle far less traffic than what it carries today. While the city has done some repaving work—including an overnight paving project on a stretch of Shaw in late 2025—the underlying design issues like narrow sidewalks, limited crosswalks, and inadequate signage at some intersections remain.

What Fresno Accident Data Tells Us

Why Shaw Avenue Has Become a Hotspot for Car Accidents in Fresno 2

According to California’s Transportation Injury Mapping System (TIMS), Fresno recorded 1,652 total crashes in 2024. Those crashes killed 58 people and injured 2,192 others. Over a third of those collisions—571 crashes, or 34.6%—happened on state highways. Pedestrians were involved in 174 crashes, making up 10.5% of the total. Bicyclists were involved in 91 crashes (5.5%), and motorcyclists were involved in 90 (5.4%). That’s a staggering amount of harm on Fresno’s roads in just one year.

According to the “Deadly By Design” study by Smart Growth America, Fresno ranks as the 21st most dangerous city for pedestrians in the entire country. The city recorded 235 pedestrian fatalities over a ten-year span from 2010 to 2019, which works out to about 2.4 deaths per 100,000 people each year. Shaw Avenue is a big part of that problem. Between 2008 and 2018, Shaw Avenue recorded nine pedestrian fatalities, making it the third deadliest road in Fresno behind Highway 99 (18 fatalities) and Blackstone Avenue (11 fatalities). The intersection of Shaw and Valentine avenues alone saw six pedestrian accidents during that period, earning it a spot as one of Fresno’s most dangerous intersections overall.

With 58 people killed on Fresno roads in a single year, the urgency couldn’t be clearer. Shaw Avenue and its major intersections contribute significantly to those numbers, and the trend hasn’t improved. When you look at crash data from the past five years, intersections along Shaw consistently appear in the top rankings for both frequency and severity. this data please

A Timeline of Fatal Accidents on Shaw Avenue

Shaw Avenue hasn’t just seen fender benders and minor collisions. This road has been the site of some of Fresno’s deadliest crashes in recent years, and the pattern shows no signs of slowing down.

In January 2025, four people were killed and four others injured when a Ford van pulled into the path of a Nissan Altima at Shaw and Floyd avenues on the west side of the county. The collision was so violent that both vehicles caught fire. Investigators suspected alcohol and drugs were factors.

Just weeks later, in January 2025, a 51-year-old man named Muhammad Akbar was killed while crossing Shaw Avenue at First Street in the early morning. He was in the crosswalk doing everything right, and he still didn’t make it home. In June 2024, a driver in a Hyundai veered into oncoming traffic on Shaw near Chateau Fresno Avenue around 4 a.m. and hit a pickup truck head-on. The Hyundai driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and Shaw was shut down for hours.

Then in December 2025, 44-year-old Christopher Alipaz was struck and killed by multiple vehicles while crossing Shaw near Marks Avenue around 5 a.m. Both drivers said they never saw him. In December 2024, a wrong-way driver on Highway 99 near the Shaw Avenue on-ramp caused a multi-vehicle collision that killed two people. These aren’t isolated tragedies. They’re part of an ongoing pattern that makes Shaw Avenue one of the most dangerous corridors in Fresno County for both drivers and pedestrians.

What to Do After a Car Accident on Shaw Avenue?

The moments right after a crash on Shaw Avenue can feel chaotic, especially with traffic flying by and people honking. But what you do in those first few minutes can make or break your case down the road. Here’s what matters most:

  • Get out of the travel lanes if you can. Shaw moves fast, and the last thing you need is another car slamming into yours while you’re sitting in traffic. If your vehicle is drivable, pull into one of the parking lots along Shaw or turn onto a side street. Flip your hazards on right away.
  • Call 911, even if nobody seems seriously hurt. You need that police report. Without one, it becomes your word against the other driver’s when you go to file a claim. Officers will document the scene, talk to witnesses, and create an official record you can use later.
  • See a doctor as soon as possible. Adrenaline masks pain. People walk away from crashes feeling fine and then wake up the next morning barely able to move. Concussions, whiplash, soft tissue injuries, internal bleeding none of these always show up right away. Getting checked out immediately also creates a medical record that connects your injuries directly to the crash, which matters a lot when insurance companies start asking questions.
  • Take pictures of everything. The damage to both vehicles, the intersection, the traffic lights, skid marks on the road, your injuries, even the weather conditions. Get the other driver’s information and grab contact details from anyone who saw what happened. Write down your own version of events while it’s still fresh, memory gets fuzzy fast after something like this.
  • Don’t give a recorded statement to the insurance company before talking to a lawyer. Insurance adjusters are not on your side. Their job is to pay you as little as possible, and anything you say in a recorded statement can be twisted to reduce your payout. Before you sign anything or agree to a settlement, have a car accident attorney look at your case and tell you what it’s actually worth.
