Small Plane Crashes Into Drainage Canal Near Camarillo Homes

A quiet Sunday evening in Camarillo turned into an emergency scene when a small plane went down just steps from a residential neighborhood. On February 15, 2026, a single-engine Cessna 210B crashed into a drainage canal near Carmen Drive and Lucero Street, leaving both people on board in critical condition with severe injuries.

The crash happened around 6:15 p.m., right around the time families in that neighborhood would have been sitting down for dinner, kids finishing up homework, people walking their dogs. It’s almost impossible to overstate how close this came to being a much worse situation.

According to the Ventura County Fire Department, the aircraft was a fixed-wing single-engine Cessna 210B. Flight tracker data shows the plane had taken off from Las Vegas International Airport just before 4:30 p.m. that afternoon, roughly an hour and forty-five minutes before the crash.

Ventura County Fire Division Chief Nick Cleary told reporters that emergency dispatch received a call around 6:05 p.m. that the aircraft was experiencing engine trouble and was trying to make it back to the airport. About five minutes later, the plane was reported down near Carmen Drive.

When firefighters arrived, they found the aircraft upside down in the drainage canal that runs alongside Carmen Drive, just a few blocks from Monte Vista Middle School and roughly three miles from Camarillo Airport. The rescue was complicated — the plane had come to rest on the opposite side of the ditch from where emergency vehicles could stage, and at least part of the wreckage ended up tangled in nearby trees. One of the plane’s wings was spotted stuck dozens of feet up in a tree close to where the aircraft landed.

Firefighters from Ventura County Fire, Oxnard Fire, and the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office all responded. Both occupants had to be extricated from the wreckage before being rushed to a local hospital in critical condition.

No homes or other structures were hit. No one on the ground was hurt. There was no fire at the crash site, though it remained unclear how much fuel was still on the aircraft. Firefighters stayed on scene afterward to deal with any potential hazardous materials from the damaged plane.

Authorities have not released the identities, ages, or genders of the two people who were on board.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have both been notified and are investigating.

This is not the first time a plane has gone down near Camarillo

Camarillo Airport is a busy general aviation airport and one of the larger ones in Ventura County. With roughly 150,000 annual takeoffs and landings — that’s over 400 operations a day and more than 380 aircraft based on site, the surrounding neighborhoods are no strangers to aviation activity. Unfortunately, that also means they’ve dealt with aviation incidents before.

In January 2024, an experimental aircraft crashed into a field near Howard Road, just southeast of the airport, injuring two people. That crash happened after the pilot reported a loss of engine power.

In 2022, a small plane crashed west of the airport shortly after takeoff, killing the pilot. In 2019, two separate fatal crashes occurred — one involving a private aircraft that went down 1,000 feet from the runway, and another involving a home-built plane that crashed into a field after takeoff.

And of course, the January 2020 helicopter crash in Calabasas that killed Kobe Bryant and eight others involved a helicopter that had been en route to Camarillo Airport.

For residents who live near the airport, these incidents aren’t abstract news stories. They’re reminders that living near an active airport carries real risk — and that when something goes wrong in the air, people on the ground can be in danger too.

Who can be held responsible after a plane crash in California?

Aviation accident cases are some of the most complex in personal injury law. Unlike a car accident where you’re usually looking at one or two drivers, a plane crash can involve multiple potentially responsible parties.

The pilot. If pilot error contributed to the crash — whether that means a mistake in judgment, failure to respond properly to an emergency, or flying while fatigued or impaired — the pilot or the pilot’s estate can be held liable.

The aircraft owner or operator. If someone other than the pilot owned the plane, they have a responsibility to make sure the aircraft is properly maintained and airworthy. If they cut corners on maintenance or allowed an unqualified pilot to fly the plane, they could share liability.

The aircraft manufacturer. If a mechanical failure caused or contributed to the crash, the company that built the plane — or the company that manufactured the specific part that failed — could be held liable under product liability law. This could include design defects, manufacturing defects, or failure to provide adequate warnings or instructions.

Maintenance and repair companies. Aircraft require regular inspections and maintenance. If the company responsible for servicing the plane made a mistake — missed something during an inspection, installed a part incorrectly, used a defective replacement part — they could be on the hook.

Air traffic controllers. If miscommunication or errors by air traffic control contributed to the accident, the federal government could potentially be held liable under the Federal Tort Claims Act.

In this Camarillo crash, the early reports mention engine trouble. If the investigation confirms a mechanical failure, the focus could shift to the aircraft manufacturer, the maintenance provider, or whoever was responsible for keeping that engine in safe working condition. But until the FAA and NTSB complete their investigation, it’s too early to say with certainty what went wrong.

What kind of compensation can crash victims pursue?

People who are hurt in aviation accidents or families who lose someone, may be entitled to compensation for their losses. In California, that can include medical bills and ongoing treatment costs, lost income and lost earning capacity, pain and suffering, emotional distress, and in wrongful death cases, loss of companionship and support.

California follows a pure comparative negligence system, which means that even if the injured person was partially at fault, their compensation is reduced by their percentage of fault rather than being eliminated entirely.

It’s worth noting that the statute of limitations for personal injury claims related to aviation accidents in California is generally two years from the date of the crash. If a government entity is involved, for example, if air traffic control played a role, you may have as little as six months to file an administrative claim. These deadlines are strict, and missing them can mean losing your right to pursue compensation altogether.

What about people on the ground?

In this particular crash, thankfully no one on the ground was hurt and no homes were damaged. But that’s not always the case. When a plane goes down in or near a residential area, homeowners and bystanders can suffer property damage, physical injuries, and serious psychological trauma.

If a plane crashes near your home and you or your property are affected, you may have more legal options than you realize. Even in cases where the damage isn’t immediately obvious, it’s worth talking to an experienced personal injury attorney to understand where you stand.

Talk to an attorney who handles serious injury cases

If you or someone close to you was hurt in a plane crash, whether you were on the aircraft or just happened to be nearby when it came down, you don’t have to figure out the legal side of things on your own. Aviation cases are messy. There are federal agencies involved, potentially multiple people or companies at fault, and you usually need specialists like accident reconstruction experts just to piece together what happened.

That’s what we do at Bojat Law Group. We handle serious injury cases across California, Ventura County included. We’ve seen how overwhelming it gets when someone is dealing with major injuries and at the same time trying to figure out who’s responsible and how they’re going to cover the bills.

If you’ve got questions about this crash, about another aviation accident, about any serious injury, just call us. The consultation is free. We’ll hear you out, give you an honest take on your situation, and go from there. You don’t pay us anything unless we get you a result.
