Sandy Fire Triggers Simi Valley Evacuations

The Sandy Fire broke out around 10:50 a.m. Monday off Sandy Avenue in Simi Valley and has already grown to roughly 184 acres with zero containment. Santa Ana winds gusting up to 25 mph out of the east are pushing the flames hard, and several structures have burned, including at least two homes near Trickling Brook Court off Rambling Road.

The Ventura County Fire Department has more than 200 firefighters on the ground, supported by three air tankers and six helicopters running aerial suppression in coordination with ground crews.

If you live in Simi Valley or nearby parts of Ventura County, here is where things stand right now.

Evacuations

Mandatory evacuation orders are in place for Simi Valley Zones 32, 33, 34, and 35. If you are in one of these zones, leave now. Do not wait. An evacuation order is a lawful directive, and the area is closed to public access.

Warnings have been issued for Simi Valley Zone 31, plus Thousand Oaks Zones TOAK-06 and TOAK-07. A warning means conditions can shift quickly. Anyone who needs extra time, or who has pets or livestock to move, should not wait for the warning to turn into an order.

The temporary evacuation point is at Rancho Santa Susana Community Park, 5005 Los Angeles Avenue. Small animals can be taken to the Simi Valley Animal Shelter at 670 W. Los Angeles Avenue. Large animals are being accepted at the Ventura County Fairgrounds, 10 E. Harbor Boulevard. For live evacuation maps and zone updates, go to vcemergency.com.

Simi Valley Unified School District has confirmed all students are safe and are being kept indoors because of poor air quality from the smoke. If your child is at school in the area, follow the district’s instructions on pickup and shelter-in-place protocols rather than driving toward the fire zone.

Simi Valley police say the fire was reported around 10:17 a.m. after someone hit a rock with a tractor near the 2600 block of Rudolph Drive. The cause is still under investigation.

Talk to a Ventura County Wildfire Accident Lawyer

Bojat Law Group is based in Westlake Village, and many of our clients, neighbors, and friends live in the communities now under threat. Our thoughts are with everyone evacuating, and with the firefighters and air crews working to hold the line.

When a wildfire damages your home, car, or business, the days after the fire matter almost as much as the fire itself. Insurance adjusters move fast. Causes get investigated. Liability questions come up, especially when a fire is sparked by equipment, utility work, or someone else’s negligence on private property. A Ventura County wildfire accident lawyer can help you understand what to document, how to handle the insurance claim, and whether a third party may be responsible for the loss.

If you have been hurt or displaced by the Sandy Fire, or your property has been damaged, you can reach our office once you are safe. Right now, the priority is getting out. Take your people, take your pets, take your important documents if you can grab them in seconds, and let the professionals do the rest.
