Police in Huntington Beach have identified the driver killed in a violent multi-vehicle crash that unfolded Tuesday afternoon at a busy city intersection. The crash, which involved at least seven vehicles and left multiple people injured including two government officers, remains under active investigation.
The collision occurred around 2:45 p.m. at the intersection of Goldenwest Street and Heil Avenue, according to the Huntington Beach Police Department. Emergency crews rushed to the scene after reports of a high-speed crash with extensive vehicle damage and multiple injuries.
The driver who died has been identified by the Orange County Coroner’s Office as 37-year-old Ryan Mark Larson of Huntington Beach.
Tesla traveling at high rate of speed before impact
Based on the preliminary investigation, a gray Tesla Model 3 was traveling eastbound on Heil Avenue at an extremely high rate of speed when it entered the intersection with Goldenwest Street. A witness told investigators the vehicle appeared to be traveling at speeds possibly exceeding 100 miles per hour.
As the Tesla crossed the intersection, it lost control and collided with several vehicles. The force of the crash sent debris into other nearby cars. The Tesla rolled over multiple times before coming to rest east of the intersection.
Video obtained by local media captured the moment two cars collided in the intersection, showing the violent nature of the impact.
Multiple injuries including two officers
Firefighters from the Huntington Beach Fire Department responded and pronounced the Tesla driver dead at the scene. Three other victims were transported to area hospitals in stable condition. Among them was an officer traveling in an Orange County Probation Department vehicle.
Several additional people were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
Investigation remains ongoing
Police have not yet released full details regarding what caused the Tesla to reach such extreme speed or whether impairment was a contributing factor. Investigators are continuing to review physical evidence, witness statements, and available video footage.
Authorities emphasized that reckless speed remains one of the most dangerous behaviors on city roadways and continues to be a leading cause of fatal crashes across California.
The key legal issues that often arise in crashes like this
In crashes like this, the legal issues usually go well beyond the basic headline. When a collision involves high speed, multiple vehicles, and a fatal outcome, investigators and insurance carriers tend to zoom in on several questions at once. The first is whether speed was the main driver of the impact and whether that speed rises to the level of reckless behavior. If that point is supported by evidence, liability can become much harder to argue against.
Multi vehicle crashes also raise a second layer of analysis. Even if one driver appears to be the primary cause, insurers often look at the full chain of events to see whether any other factor played a role. That can include the positions of the cars at the intersection, whether a driver had time to react, and whether the force of the initial impact caused secondary crashes that created their own injuries and damages.
Another complication here is that reported injuries include officers in a government vehicle. When public employees are hurt on duty, there can be additional paperwork, coverage issues, and timelines that do not always mirror a standard two car claim. And while speed appears to be the focus in early reporting, serious crashes can also lead to questions about vehicle condition and data. Investigators may review onboard information alongside witness statements and video footage. In cases with this level of impact, that combination of evidence often becomes the deciding factor in how fault is finally assigned and how insurance negotiations unfold.
