Orange Circle Car Crashes: Why This Intersection Is So Dangerous

The historic Orange Circle, formally the Plaza Park roundabout at Glassell Street and Chapman Avenue in Orange, California, has become alarmingly prone to crashes. Recently, a speeding driver crashed into the newly restored fountain, plowing through benches and barriers in a disturbing repeat of earlier incidents. The crash occurred shortly after 1 a.m. on Sunday, August 4, 2024, and was captured on video. The driver, an 18‑year‑old from Rancho Santa Margarita, was not under the influence but was arrested for possessing nitrous oxide. It’s not the first time this intersection has been hit, local reports note this was yet another incident at the Circle. Why is the Orange Circle so dangerous, and why do crashes keep happening there? In this blog, we’ll break down the factors that make this intersection such a frequent site of accidents.

Common causes of Orange Circle car crashes

  • High entry speeds. Drivers coming off Chapman or Glassell often fail to slow down enough before the curve, which makes losing control almost inevitable.
  • Missed right-of-way. Vehicles already circulating have priority, but collisions are common when newcomers try to “beat the gap.”
  • Lane mix-ups. With two circulating lanes, some drivers drift across or exit from the wrong lane, creating side-swipes and near misses.
  • Distraction. The Circle’s fountain, pedestrians, and surrounding businesses often pull drivers’ attention away at the worst moment.
  • Impairment. Alcohol- and drug-related crashes have been documented here, including the August 2024 fountain collision where nitrous oxide was found in the car.
  • Limited visibility. At night or in rain, sightlines can be reduced, making it harder to judge traffic speed inside the roundabout.

Each of these factors has been identified in police reports and community accounts following serious incidents at the Circle.

Speed limits in roundabouts

According to FHWA design standards, the Orange Circle functions as an Urban Double-Lane Roundabout, which means it is engineered for recommended entry speeds of about 25 mph. While California law does not impose a fixed speed limit for roundabouts, drivers are expected to follow the Basic Speed Law and reduce speed to a safe level. Entering this type of roundabout at higher speeds — as seen in the recent crash — almost guarantees loss of control.

motorists approaching a roundabout must:

  • Slow down before entering. Approaching a roundabout requires a significant reduction in speed compared to the road leading into it.
  • Follow the typical safe speeds. Most roundabouts are designed for 15–25 mph (25–40 km/h).
  • Yield to pedestrians and cyclists. Always stop and give them the right of way at marked crossings.
  • Yield to vehicles already in the roundabout. Enter only when there is a safe gap in traffic.
  • Travel counterclockwise only and never attempt to pass other vehicles inside the circle.
  • Use turn signals when preparing to exit.

How an Orange County car accident attorney can help

If you or a loved one has been hurt in a crash at the Circle — whether as a pedestrian, passenger, or driver — you may be entitled to:

  • Coverage for emergency and long-term medical care
  • Compensation for lost wages and diminished earning ability
  • Pain and suffering damages for the disruption to your life
  • Property damage for your vehicle or other personal losses

An experienced Orange County car accident lawyer investigates all angles: speed data, crash reports, eyewitness testimony, and city design flaws. Insurance companies often try to downplay liability in these cases, but with strong representation, victims can fight for the compensation they deserve.

Preventing future accidents at the Circle

Traffic safety experts have suggested:

  • Installing stronger crash barriers around Plaza Park
  • Adding speed bumps or narrowing lanes before the Circle
  • Posting electronic speed-warning signs
  • Increasing traffic enforcement during late-night and weekend hours

Sasha Bojat, founding attorney of Bojat Law Group, explains:

“Roundabouts are designed to calm traffic, but without clear signage, drivers often assume they can carry their approach speed into the circle. At the Orange Circle, that mistake is especially dangerous. A driver going 50 miles per hour has no chance of making that curve safely. Advisory speed postings could save lives.”
