Did Bakersfield Just Have an Earthquake or a Sonic Boom?

Around 12:40 p.m. on Sunday, October 19, residents across Bakersfield, CA reported a loud boom and brief vibrations. Many described it as “a jolt” or “something hitting the roof.”

According to VolcanoDiscovery, the event was logged as an unconfirmed seismic-like event about 0.8 miles south of Bakersfield, roughly magnitude 3.0. However, the U.S. Geological Survey has not confirmed an earthquake at that time.

Because Kern County lies near Edwards Air Force Base and China Lake, experts say the noise could also have been a sonic boom from a supersonic aircraft. Sonic booms can rattle windows and sound like short, sharp quakes. Earthquakes shake from below, while sonic booms blast from above and quakes travel through rock, while sonic booms travel through air. On instruments, a boom often shows little or only a short, high-frequency blip, whereas earthquakes display clear P and S waves; when several stations detect a boom, arrival times match the much slower speed of sound in air.
