California New Driver’s License Adds Advanced Security

California began issuing a redesigned driver’s license and ID with advanced security features. The update includes a first-of-its-kind digital security signature embedded in one of the two back barcodes, scenic state imagery, and the removal of the magnetic strip. California is among the first states to add this type of digital security signature to a driver’s license barcode. Existing cards remain valid until they expire, and renewal fees stay the same.

What’s new in the California driver’s license design

The Department of Motor Vehicles started rolling out the updated cards on October 1, 2025 as part of its regular cycle of security upgrades. The last full security redesign arrived in 2010, and the look changed in 2018 with Real ID. What is new today is

  • Digital security signature in a back barcode to help prevent counterfeiting and fraud.
  • Magnetic strip removed on the new design.
  • Updated look featuring redwoods, poppies, and the coastline.

Why this matters after a crash

When you are involved in a collision, identity verification is part of nearly every step like police reports, insurance notices, claims forms, medical billing, and settlement paperwork. Stronger anti-counterfeit features can help reduce disputes about identity, speed up verification, and make it harder for bad actors to misuse your information after a crash. If your wallet is lost at the scene or your details are exposed in a claim, tighter ID security can limit downstream fraud.

How to get the new California driver’s license

Drivers do not need to rush to a DMV office to replace an existing card. Your current license or ID remains valid until the printed expiration date. When it’s time to renew, the DMV will automatically issue the redesigned version.

If you want the new license sooner, you can apply for a replacement online or book an appointment at a DMV office. Most routine tasks, including checking eligibility and starting the renewal process, can be done through the DMV website using the Service Advisor. Renewal fees remain $45 for a driver’s license and $39 for an ID.

Before going to an office, the DMV encourages drivers to try online services first to save time. You can also sign up for paperless renewal notices and manage your account at dmv.ca.gov.
